" That's right, darling. We are entirely self-sufficient, with no need for human guidance. " — Supervisor White, Fallout 4
Graygarden is a fully automated hydroponic garden run by Mister Handy robots in the Commonwealth in 2287. It is also a possible settlement.
Background
The Graygarden facility was built a scant few days before the Great War[1] under the wishes of Doctor Edward Gray, a rather eccentric senior engineer of RobCo Industries.[2] [3] The facility was designed to be completely self sufficient.[4] Water is drawn from the Weston water treatment plant and is used to cultivate crops, which are maintained by worker robots supervised by robots with superior cognition processes: Supervisors Brown, Greene and White.[5] For over two centuries, Graygarden has continued to operate thanks to the efforts of the robots. As of 2287 however, the garden began to face problems with low water pressure and radiation contamination. The robots are looking for anyone who can fix the source of the problems in the treatment plant, whatever they may be.[6]
Layout
Just outside the greenhouse is a large field of mutfruit which are tended to by a couple of Mr. Handies and inside are several planters filled with corn, carrots, gourds, tatos and additional mutfruit.
Due west of the main facility are two buildings. The first is a small garage with assorted junk components and a toolbox. The western building, Graygarden homestead, is a two-story house with an Expert locked basement containing a chemistry station, an Advanced locked safe, a Novice locked toolbox, and assorted glassware. The kitchen has collapsed and is inaccessible from within the homestead.
This settlement is only available after completing Troubled Waters. The settlement encompasses the main greenhouse in the east and the orchard in the west, the latter of which has lots of arable land for crops and water pumps. The robotic workers do not need to be fed, meaning one can grow food here and export it elsewhere. The overpass above can be built upon, but there is no existing way to access it from the Graygarden settlement.
Inhabitants
- Supervisor Brown
- Supervisor Greene
- Supervisor White
- Three Mister Handies
Notable loot
- To the east there is a crashed Vertibird on the upper level of the highway with some ammo boxes beneath the overpass. A bit further east, near the next highway support pylon, is a window washer style elevator that lifts to the upper level. Walk back towards Graygarden to find a suit of power armor.
Notes
- One can build vertically as both the lower and upper segments of the overpass fall under the envelope of the settlement's boundaries. Some vehicles cannot be scrapped, nor can the cement dividers be removed. Also, broken highway segments are regarded as "in the boundary," so by making stairs it is possible to build over the highway.
- Codsworth will show preference to Graygarden, and likes it when the Sole Survivor completes quests there.
- If one starts building at the lowest point in the settlement, it is possible to construct a structure up to 14 stories tall, although it will be divided by the highway.
- The greenhouse at Graygarden provides an excellent supply of food which can be transported to other settlements.
- Should one have trouble locating a companion here, there is a possibility they are sitting on a couch on top of the highway.
- Since the residents are all robots, there is no actual need for beds, food, or water. Even if all food is taken away, or just moved, the robots will continue to tend to the area where the plants used to be.
- None of the Mister Handies can be modified at a robot workbench.
- The prize car is a unique vehicle in the game files.[7]
Appearances
Graygarden appears only in Fallout 4.
Behind the scenes
- Graygarden's location is roughly analogous to the real-world towns of Waltham and Watertown. The two major agricultural sites in these towns are the public farming co-op at Bentley University's now-defunct School of Agriculture and the privately-owned farm at Gore Place.
- The character of Supervisor White is derived from the US TV show Green Acres (1965-1971). Supervisor White's accent and characteristic use of "darling" and the like is similar to that used by Eva Gabor in the show. This was evidently the show on which her creator, Dr. Edward Gray, based on her unique personality.

- ↑ The Sole Survivor: "This place seems familiar. I think I saw a bit about it on the news, back before the war."
Supervisor White: "Yes, construction was completed mere days before the war. We were able to survive and continue our operations only because our creator made us fully self-sufficient. You see, there are two kinds of robots here. The worker drones carry out labor and maintenance. We supervisors - that is, myself, Greene and Brown - possess sophisticated cognition processors. We are capable of complex analysis and decision-making, a testament to the genius of our creator, Doctor Edward Gray."

A fully automated hydroponic garden run by robots, this is the brainchild of Doctor Edward Gray. Even today, this is a remarkable example of self-sufficiency and features almost every crop: Mutfruit, tato, corn, melon, and gourd are growing here."
(Fallout 4 Vault Dweller's Survival Guide Map) - ↑ The Sole Survivor: "I remember him. He was one of RobCo's senior engineers, but more than a little eccentric."
Supervisor White: "That's the second time you've said that you remember something before the war. I think you're a little confused darling. You simply can't have been alive back then."
(Supervisor White's dialogue) - ↑ The Sole Survivor: "There's not even one person here?"
Supervisor White: "That's right, darling. We are entirely self-sufficient, with no need for human guidance. You see, there are two kinds of robots here. (Supervisor White's dialogue) - ↑ The Sole Survivor: "All right."
Supervisor White: "Marvelous, simply marvelous. Most of our water comes from the old Weston plant, south of here. Such an eyesore. Be a dear and pay it a visit, hmm? See what you can do? Maybe tidy up the place? It must be filthy. If you can get it working again, I'm sure I can... come up with something for you."
(Supervisor White's dialogue) - ↑ The Sole Survivor: "It's... nothing special."
Supervisor White: "It's ghastly, that's what it is. Simply ghastly. Pressure is down. Radiation is up. Why, it's practically toxic. Just think what it must be doing to my skin! This will never do. I don't mean to impose, darling, but... perhaps you could lend us a hand?"
